I would like you to meet my friend Michael. He is a homeless Vet. I have taken a journey strictly by walking in faith to get him back on his feet. I have lived with Michael through his current living conditions and have started him on a path for a better life. By doing so I have earned his trust, his respect, his love, and his friendship.he is 60 years old with a bad back.conventional labor jobs are not an option so Michael has been forced to panhandle just to survive. In the last three weeks I have do the same right beside him. If enough money was raised to get him a hotel room... That's where he would stay. If not... I slept in the dirt right beside him.micheal had been Recieving benefits from the VA for about $975 a month up until 2009 when he stopped having a good mailing address.i am working on getting his back pay for him and to get him set back up on his benifits but for anyone that has ever had to deal with the VA... It's a lengthy process. My approach with Michael is far from conventional and that's why I believe that this has been successful in many ways up to this point. This is a greater plan designed by someone much higher than myself.
With most charities that try to help the homeless... They try to help as many as they can. The help that is offered DOES help.... But it's temporary, leaving the homeless person back at square one after a day or two. The fundraiser that I have started now for Michael is for the total of $16,000 and I plan to have it all raised by September first. Sure it seems like a large amount , but allow me to itemize what it is for. I plan to get Michael far enough ahead in life that where he's at now will continue to be a distant memory. I have been working on my own business for a long time now as far as the planning stage.i have built cell phone towers for 15 years and I am a well respected expert in my field. On October first , my business will start turning a profit and I will employ Michael, utilizing his brain and not his physical abilities.i have from now until October first to get Michael trained to where he needs to be. I want to be able to ensure his continual success in life after this fundraiser gets him to what I would consider a decent quality of life.especially considering what his quality of life is now.the following is my outline for the fundraiser and my reasoning behind each item:
*$11,475-pick up truck : Michael will need transportation in his new life. Not only to get around, but also for work. There are countless ways that I can contract him with a pickup along with the vital job skills that I will teach him.this will not be a brand new $40,000 dually ... But it will also not be a $500 rust bucket that he will have to continue to work on daily. The goal is to get him to a point that he will never have to go back to his old way of life.
*$1,000- 6 months of full coverage insurance for his truck.
*$800- one month of residency at a furnished location. Once he starts work for me , I will have many options for him for residency. The work will be out of state , so this is just a temporary solution to allow him to focus on his job training without panhandling for a place to stay.
*400- groceries for 1 month @ $100 a week.
* $425- tough book laptop.: I will need to teach Michael basic computer skills and to be able to show him some of the technical aspects of his job. A laptop will be a necessity . I have found a company that refurbishes military tough books . They are as good as new and are the most durable laptops around. No matter how rough Michael is with it, there will be no concern for the integrity of the computer.:)
*$500- cell phone: $100 for a phone and 6 months worth of $50 a month pre paid cards. In today's workforce , or just life in general, a cell phone is a critical tool. Michael will not only need it for work, he may need it in an emergency sometime.
$600-clothes,shoes,ect. The man has practically nothing right now. $600 is not really a whole lot to get this man clean, unused clothes and shoes.
$500- gas for 1.5 months: this will allow him to get around to the VA.. To the SS office... All of the running around that is going to be required to rebuild his life.
$70-manicure/pedicure: while you may laugh... This is an essential item ,I believe. Michael currently has one fingernail that is falling off and bleeding.his nails are filthy and I have been worried about the potential for infection. I want him to start his new life not only in a healthy financial state, but a good physical one as well.
$30-salon/hair cut. His hair is filthy and need the touch of a professional.
$200-optometrist / glasses: Michael is in dire need of glasses . This will greatly affect his self esteem when he can see better again.
$16,000 seem like a lot. In actuality it may be. But this is what I think will be worth giving this kind hearted Vietnam Veteran his life back.some may criticize my approach. What am I saying .. A LOT of people will. But that's ok. I have listened to what God has put on my heart so far and I am humbled and amazed so far. I don't plan for this total amount to come from any one person. There have been quite a few people that have helped and prayed for Michael already and he is completely grateful. I plan to email as many churches as it takes, enlist the help of all of my Facebook friends, until this goal is met. What church would not donate $5,$10, even $20 to a homeless man? I just need enough small donations to end homelessness for one man who honorably served his country.
Please keep in mind. This is a charity of faith. I am doing all of this because I try to follow Gods will more than my own these days.:) but you do not have to be of the same faith as me to show compassion. Religions are chosen by each individual. But compassion for this one man that needs it should be shown by EVERYONE. Thank y'all so much for reading this far. I commend you.:) :) :)
