The Philly Spirit Synchronized Skating Team is proud to host a Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer event at The Philadelphia Skating Club & Humane Society (PSCHS). Several of us, including our coach and team captain, have recently lost loved ones to this disease. In addition, David Batista, the husband of one of the founding members of the team, and a long-time club member himself, was just diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and is currently undergoing treatment.
Given Scott Hamilton’s long history and association with the PSCHS, as well as his personal friendship with our coach, John Thomas (they were both competitors in the 1984 Winter Olympics), organizing a Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer event was clearly the perfect choice.
We invite everyone, especially other synchro skaters and teams, to join us in our Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer and Sk8 for David event by coming out to do a 5K on ice! How long do you think it will take you and/or your team, to skate a 5K? Synchro skaters will also get a chance to join in giant synchro formations. Let’s see how big a pinwheel (giant eggbeater anyone?) we can make!
Most importantly, let’s see which team or individual can get the most donations for the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation in honor of David, and the many others who are battling this disease, as well as in memory of those we have lost. Not a skater? You can still participate by giving a donation. What better way to honor the memories of those we lost and to support David in his battle with cancer.
Schedules will be emailed to registered participants/teams a week before the event.
