$323.00 that is all it takes sometimes.
Just any given day, you are driving home from work. You are tired and you are running late. As you drive, you are thinking through your bills and what groceries you need to buy. You are making that list of what gets paid this paycheck and what types of groceries you can purchase for your family. And then it happens. You run over something in the highway and you get two flat tires. Your mind starts to race, “I can’t go through this right now!”, “When is it going to get better?”, “How can I afford this?!” and “Why can’t something- just one thing- go right?”
This is a common experience for many of us.
And now add to this reality, you just moved out from an abusive partner. You are down significantly in income due to this loss. You are in the mist of speaking with advocates, lawyers, prosecutors, judges and constantly retelling your story. You have bill collectors calling you. And you need your job. Without your car you cannot keep it or transport your children to and from doctors, school or make it to all the appointments that have been added because you are a survivor of domestic violence. Your family judges you for leaving, and you have no one to turn to for help. All you need is $323.00 to get your car fixed.
We here at the Michigan Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence, understand all too well the added financial burdens survivors’ face when they start a life free from domestic violence. We have a program called the Domestic Violence Recovery Program (DVR). It is a survivor started program that offers no interest loans made in partnership with Michigan State Credit Union, MCEDSV and six domestic violence service providers in Mid-Michigan. This program is designed to loan money to survivors like the one mentioned above to cover costs for life events that they do not have resources to cover in the immediate moment of financial crisis. Survivors pay back the loan at a reduced and flexible amount based on their income. We need your help to keep this program going and to expand it beyond the current region. Together we can create financial security to survivors of domestic violence! Thank you from all of us and the survivors this will assist in the future!
