"The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust embraces all measures that compliment the conservation, preservation and protection of wildlife. These include anti-poaching, safe guarding the natural environment, enhancing community awareness, addressing animal welfare issues, providing veterinary assistance to animals in need, rescuing and hand rearing elephant and rhino orphans, along with other species that can ultimately enjoy a quality of life in wild terms when grown." Taken from the DSWT mission statement We, the citizens of Michigan, are marching on October 4th in Royal Oak as part of the 2015 Global March for Elephants, Rhinos, and Lions to end the trade of ivory and rhino horn. This movement was started by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which has successfully raised over 150 orphaned elephants, in addition to their many other conservation programs. Across Africa, one elephant is killed every 15 minutes to supply the ever increasing demand for ivory in both the east and west, with the United States being the second largest market for ivory. At the current rate, African elephants could be extinct in the wild by 2025. The current poaching crisis not only constitutes an immense threat to the most iconic animals, but it is also a matter of global security, with terrorist organizations utilizing ivory and rhino horn as a way to fund their atrocities. The illegal wildlife trade now generates an estimated $23 billion per year and has become the fourth most lucrative illegal activity behind drugs, counterfeiting, and human trafficking. The ivory trafficking crisis is a complex problem and one which requires action on multiple levels to stem the slaughter of elephants in the wild. The people of Michigan do not want to support the ivory trade or those who maintain it, and we will do what we can to stop this injustice. We will not only march in support of legislation banning the commercial sale of ivory and rhino horn in Michigan, but we are also raising funds for The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the inspiration for this global movement. Please join us and demonstrate your commitment in the fight to save the African elephant and rhino from extinction. "We admire elephants in part because they demonstrate what we consider the finest human traits: empathy, self-awareness, and social intelligence. But the way we treat them puts on display the very worst of human behavior." - Graydon Carter Contact lead organizers for more information on our march October 4th in downtown Royal Oak: Andrea ( and Larissa (
