Migraine is a serious health issue that adversely affects about 1 in 5 women and 1 in 20 men. It is the 8th most disabling disease in the world yet, in the US, less than 1% of all national health funding is directed towards this ailment. Migraine not only affects the quality of life of those afflicted, but also negatively impacts those surrounding them. And all this "down time" translates to significant adverse ramifications economically, as those who suffer lose weeks and months of productivity over time.
I personally have suffered from migraines for over half a century and know first-hand how much they decrease one’s quality of life. Countless events and activities have been missed due to the dreaded migraine. It wasn’t until I discovered sumatriptan, about 20 years ago, when I finally had some (but not complete) control over my head. I would have missed my own wedding without it.
For many people, the currently available triptans and other medications are only temporary good news because they can stop being effective over long-term use. I’ve recently lost two family members to chronic migraines, as they no longer could endure the suffering anymore. Clearly, further research is needed and the Migraine Research Foundation’s supporting role in this effort is so important.
The NYC Marathon will be my first marathon and the second time I've run on behalf of the MRF. This will be a crazy, extraordinary experience yet, no doubt for me, migraine-inducing. Joining with others, I hope to help raise awareness of this condition and the dire need for funding so that one day the millions who are affected can finally find reliable relief.
Every donation (in any amount) is greatly appreciated! Thank you.
