Migrant Justice, It's worth fighting for!

THE STORY:

My story and millions more like mine......I met the love of my life 8 years ago. We got engaged after a few years and wanted to make it official. We applied for a marriage license in our City and State (MI). They said he had to have a social security number to get a marriage license . We were denied a marriage license by our County Clerk and had to go to a neighboring State (IL). That was 5 years ago. I soon learned (after visiting nearly 10 lawyers) that my husband and father of our now 6 year old daughter and my 17 year old daughter, could NOT get a green card. Many of my friends were separated from their spouses for years waiting for immigration to process their spouses and then many times their marriages ended in divorce because the process was so de-humanizing and long. Not many couples that I know of have stayed together after being separated for 2, 3 or even 10 years and still re-connect on the same terms. I went to Guatemala to meet my in-laws without my husband and just took my two girls, that was 3 years ago. Where ever we went we had to have armed people escort us around and there were always machine guns pistols hanging out of nearly every car window. It was very beautiful there, but not what I would call a place that felt safe for me or my girls. There are kids the same ages walking here from Guatemala by themselves only for the hopes of finding safety. So in theory, why would I try to put my own kids in such a horrific situation where they would have to live in fear of being kidnapped, trafficked, or fear for their safety day in and day out? My husband is a survivor of being kidnapped and tortured by the military in his country and suffers from severe symptoms of PTSD. Because he is fearful for his life, he has continued to return to the United States without authorization. He has never been able to have a hearing in front of a Judge. Most people think that if you want something bad enough you can just have it. That is not the way things work in our immigration system. People die waiting to see their loved ones and many times immigrants needing relief never get to speak to a judge about their case or have any legal representation. When my husband first came to the United States 17 years ago, he was not even given a translator. So he had no way to know what he was signing or what was going on. In the immigration system, some times the only opportunities you get aren't even real opportunities if you don't know you have them or if one explains them to you. I know that my family can be separated at any moment. I feel extreme anxiety about this day in and day out. That level of anxiety is just not healthy for any of us in our family, but we all feel it. We are always afraid when we walk outside of our home or driving some where in our car. The feeling never leaves you, we are always looking over our shoulder wondering when our last moments are going to be just that.... our last. No child or spouse should ever have to live like this. We all need to be seen as valued human beings. Everyone of us needs to know that we can feel safe to live our lives freely. Every child needs to have the right to have their parents raise them in the country that they call home. Please help keep our families together!!!! I dream about the day that my 6 year old daughter will not have to keep asking her Daddy, "When can you get your papers so we can visit Grandma together?" or "Why won't they give you your papers?, don't they know you are my Daddy?" We need comprehensive immigration reform that will protect children and their families and keep them together. At the end of the day, it is your family that is the only thing really worth fighting for!!!! Please donate to the WE BELONG TOGETHER Campaign and lift up the 2.5 million voices of the children who have been left behind and had their families torn apart because of deportation. We need funding to keep this movement going. Our children are our future and we can't afford to loose them!!!! I am willing to walk 100 miles for migrant justice and be the active change I wish to see in the world. Will you help make our dreams a reality???? Help me reach my goal, please. Organizing and taking direction takes 3 things. Women who are willing to give their time, Women who have the passion, and generous people like you to help us keep this movement alive!!!! #100women100miles #walk4justice #not1more
