Miguel, Dominican Republic: Summer Camp for Formerly Exploited Children

World of Children Inc's Photo

THE STORY:

Miguel lost both of his parents when he was just 12 years old. Left alone in the world, he and his four brothers would go to the beach front in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic to scavenge for food. Miguel often slept on the streets and picked food from the dumpsters behind restaurants. Hoping that a tourist would take him home to their country, he tried to make friends with him. They often exploited and abused him. Fortunately, Honoree Denisse Pichardo met Miguel and invited him to join her educational program at Caminante Proyecto Educativo. Her program provides academic, emotional, and psychosocial support for vulnerable children like Miguel. Their programs include health outreach and awareness programs in the local community and even summer camp programs for at-risk children and former child victims of abuse. When Miguel was 16 years old, Caminante sponsored him to take technical courses. Today he is an entrepreneur with a restaurant on the beach front he once scavenged for food. More Info: $50 can sponsor a child’s participation in a summer camp for at-risk or rescued children like Miguel. Having a safe space to develop can mean the difference between scavenging on the beach and living a happy, healthy life.
