Mike Bannister is a local dentist who began riding bikes 30 years ago. He owns 18 bikes including a tandem bike which he rides with his wife and daughter. He became involved with the visually impaired community when Peter Smith asked him to attend a Dixieland Guide Dog Meeting where they were offering tandem bike rides. He gave an 80 year old blind woman her first bike ride in the rain and said it was an experience he would never forget.
Keith Johnson, an Orangeburg resident, has Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy, which is a painless but sudden loss of central vision. This loss of vision later in life has not slowed him down and he completed the 34th annual Kiawah Island Marathon on Dec.10th.The Charleston Marathon on January 14th,The Myrtle Beach half marathon on February 18th, the Columbia half Marathon on March 10th, and the Cooper River bridge run on March 31st. http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20120401/PC20/120409892&source=RSS
