About Travis and Brendan:
1st Lieutenant Travis Manion served in the United States Marine Corps within the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Marine Expeditionary Force. He was a well-known leader, considered an insipiration to peers and subordinates alike and absolutely dedicated to his country. He completed one combat tour in Iraq, came home in 2005 and returned to Iraq for a second deployment in 2006.
On April 29, 2007, Travis was killed by sniper fire during an enemy ambush. He was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. He lays alongside his best friend from the United States Naval Academy, Lieutenant Brendan Looney, a Navy SEAL killed in Afghanistan on Sept. 21, 2010. These best friends---brothers, really---are a testament of courage, loyalty and commitment...the same traits upon which our country was built.
The Manion family established the Travis Manion Foundation in honor of Travis and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. The Foundation's mission is to provide financial assistance to deployed servicemembers' families and scholarships for inspirational students who show the same remarkable leadership potential that Travis had. To date, the foundation has awarded more than $140,000 in scholarships, $85,000 to fellowships for wounded and disabled veterans and more than $45,000 for "Good Grief" seminars to help families of the fallen.
Additionally, the Foundation runs major programs including the "Challenging the Living through Fellowships" initiative and the "Character Does Matter" leadership program, as well as operating the "9/11 Heroes" Run each September 11th---while still funding community service projects that benefit wounded and disabled veterans and Families of the Fallen.
