ALL WAYS UP FOUNDATION wrote -
My parents have always told me how hard life is after high school so I want to get an education to make a better life for myself and my family. I am the oldest out of three children and I have eight younger cousins. Being the oldest I have had to take responsibility in everything I do because all of my younger family members look up to me and therefore I must set a good example for them all. I model positive behavior to them by going to school, getting good grades and behaving myself. They are all following in my footsteps, so I want to make sure I create a positive path for them to follow. I am not sure what I want to do for the rest of my life but I think college would be the perfect place to help me decide on what I want to be. I grew up in Long Beach, CA, and have seen a lot of devastation to my community and the people that live in it. The expectations that were put on myself and my peers by my community are very low. Many do not even expect that we will graduate, let alone go to college and if we do not end up dead or in jail, we are looked at as being successful. But my parents have always wanted for me and I have always wanted more for myself than what has been laid out in front of me. Living in Long Beach many people have a very limited idea of what their future will look like. I am excited to attend college because it will help expand my horizons and introduce me to things I have never experienced before. I believe that one of the biggest things that makes me stand out is the fact that I am open minded and am not limited in my thinking. I want to push myself to achieve everything I want and to be successful in life. While many of my peers are very limited in their thinking, I am constantly trying new things, trying to challenge myself and I never stop dreaming. To me, my future is endless with opportunity. My parents have made great sacrifices to provide me with as many opportunities as possible and I want to make them proud. They have told me since I was young that academics should always be a priority and I have done my best to get good grades and make school a priority. Going to college would be great for my whole family and would guarantee the future that my parents have worked so hard to provide me with. Given that, my family has limited resources and we have often relief on my grandfather’s income to help keep us afloat. The Perlman scholarship would provide a great economic relief to me and my family as I know my parents worry about how we will afford college. It would allow me to focus on my academics and not worry so much about getting a job and making money just to get by. My parents will monitor my money closely and make sure it is spent in the right ways, because they are just as invested in my success as I am. The scholarship would be a great way to assist me in making my family proud, setting a good example for my sisters and cousins and prove all the naysayers wrong.
