BENEFITING: Alzheimer's Association
It’s that time of year again…time to run the Brooklyn Half!!! As many of you know, we ran the Brooklyn Half Marathon for the 1st time last year in honor of our mother, Janet M. O'Shea. With your generosity, love and encouragement, we were able to complete the race and raise over $7,200 for the Alzheimer’s Association (a gift that was matched making our total donation over $14,000). We plan to do it all again this year…only faster!
This year is particularly special as the race falls one day before our parents’ 50th Wedding Anniversary. Yes, 50 years...this is a truly remarkable event and should be full of pure love and joy but, as with most events in a family affected by Alzheimer’s Disease, their celebration is certain to be filled with mixed emotions. We will have a small celebration with family and friends but it will not be the party our mother would have thrown. She would have arranged spectacular flowers herself, assured the food was delicious, worn the most elegant gown, given a thoughtful speech, beamed at the site of her children and grandchildren and danced the night away. That night, however, she will likely not know where she is, what we are celebrating, or who her grandchildren are. It will be a challenge to get her to bathe and dress for the occasion. This is life with Alzheimer’s and something our father, as her tireless caregiver, has learned to cope with over the last 12 years as he has watched Janet battle this devastating disease. To watch him deal with the daily struggle of this disease inspires us but also breaks our hearts. To be next to the person you love but not be able to share a conversation with that person or do the things you love to do together is simply painful.
So, it is for all of the caregivers, families and patients out there that we plan to run our 2nd Brooklyn Half Marathon on May 20th. We know that many of you have friends or family members who have been affected by this heartbreaking disease and we were overwhelmed by your love and support last year. We have set our goal a little bit higher this year both in money and time (we hope to run it faster than last year with 2h or less as our goal- Jenny is sure to do it). We know you can get us there! It was truly inspiring to see all the people we love step up last year to make our fundraising so successful! Without you we would not have made it- through every mile we were pushed forward by your support! With your help, again, we hope that we can reach our goal again this year!
With love and gratitude - Liz and Jenny
