BENEFITING: Muscular Dystrophy Association
EVENT DATE: Oct 09, 2016
For the last two years I've ran the Chicago Marathon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. This year I decided to train for the race myself. This summer has gone well and I'm ready for the 26.2 miles that I face ahead, but I cannot say that I got here alone.
Training for a marathon is tough business and I would not be in the position to do this alone if I didn't have team and coach support I had the last two years that gave me an incredible foundation to do this. I would have faltered by now if it wasn't for Team Momentum and the amazing people I have met along the way. While I'm not officially running with Team Momentum this year I feel that it's important to continue the fundraising efforts. They've been so kind to invite me out for some of their community runs including the 20 miler and I would like to return the favor in any way possible. That is why I'm taking this last week before the marathon to show my appreciation.
It's been a big summer for the Muscular Dystrophy Association as Eteplirsen received accelerated approval by the FDA on September 19, 2016! This is the first approved treatment by the FDA as therapy for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. This is a huge step in finding a cure for a disease that effects so many males and their loved ones throughout the world. It's because of fundraising efforts with the MDA that this was able to happen and we can only hope that this along with raised awareness will help continued research for DMD and other neuromuscular diseases.
In addition to the research, clinical trials, and grants the donations the MDA receives go to providing support to kids, adults and the families from the time they're diagnosed. In 2015 alone they supported 100,000 patients with comprehensive care at over 150 specialized MDA care centers and help provide wheelchairs to patients who need them. This is only on the medical side doesn't include the 3,800 kids that can attend an MDA summer camp at no additional cost with all the medical support they need.
