EVENT DATE: Aug 24, 2014
What: Kids, families or teams will Bike Parade-style along with children from Beaumont Children’s Hospital Departments of Pediatric Oncology and Pediatric Rehabilitation on a cordoned-off half-mile course at the Birmingham Bike Festival in downtown Birmingham. Immediately following the Bike Parade, there will be a Rock Companies/Beaumont Children’s Fair located on Henrietta Street, adjacent to Shain Park.
WHO WAS ALEX GRAHAM: An incredible young woman who believed she could repair the world one smile at a time. Alex was a patient at Beaumont Children’s Hospital who lost her leg and ultimately her life to cancer. Her courage, strength and ability to put other’s needs ahead of her own is the beautiful legacy she left that continues to this day. She knew kids undergoing cancer treatment were no different from any other kids and should not be treated any different.
WHAT YOUR DOLLARS DO: Half of your dollars support The Miracle Fund at Beaumont Children’s Hospital. The Children’s Miracle Network will match the first $25,000 raised. Last year, we contributed to the Long Term Follow Up Clinic in the Pediatric Oncology Department which assists pediatric cancer survivors who are now facing medical problems related to past treatments. We also built custom adaptive bikes for children in the Rehabilitation Department who had never experienced the joy of biking before! This year, we will continue to support these programs.
In Nepal, your support will help us complete our current phase of our toilet project -building toilets in two villages without waste management and clean drinking water- and complete a rural medical clinic. Later this year, your dollars will support the next phase of our toilet project and a second medial clinic. We are also reviewing proposals to build libraries in primary schools and upgrading a mother’s group building where micro-loans are provided by and for women. Last but not least, we currently support 58 children with student scholarships.
BIKE DONATIONS: Bring old bikes and helmets for donation to American Cycle and Fitness located in Royal Oak, Novi, or Pontiac from August 1st - September 1st. These bikes will be distributed to children in Detroit.
