BENEFITING: LuMind Research Down Syndrome Foundation
EVENT DATE: Sep 20, 2015
I am running for my daughter Emily, who has Down Syndrome. She is the light of our lives and personifies joy. We love her fiercely and want to do everything we can to assist her so that she may reach her fullest potential as a human being. We know that she will have more challenges because she has Down Syndrome, but let me stress that her path in life is not worse, it is just different. There is much to be learned by appreciating the beauty of differences. I am fundraising for Lumind Research Down Syndrome Foundation, a non- profit organization that is the leading source of private funding in advancing Down Syndrome cognitive research at major research institutions, including Johns Hopkins Medicine, Stanford University, University of California at San Diego and University of Arizona. To date this organization has contributed nearly 12 million dollars to stimulate cognition research, resulting in the discovery of multiple drug targets and supporting the initiation of four clinical trials. The future is bright for individuals with Down Syndrome, and it is research such as this that will accelerate the development of treatments to significantly improve cognition, including memory, learning and speech for individuals with Down Syndrome, allowing them to participate more successfully in school, lead more independent and active lives and avoid the early onset of Alzheimer's disease (which has been linked to Down Syndrome). We want the absolute best for Emily and we are excited to support research that may lead to treatment options that could assist Emily and others like her in reaching their fullest potential and participating more fully in society.
