Tony Bialorucki's Fundraiser:

Miles for LLS

THE STORY:

I look back fondly at the moment I crossed the finish line of the 115th running of the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2011. Between fleeting moments of consciousness and persistent all-encompassing pain, I vowed that I would never undertake anything as stupid as a 26.2 mile race again. “One and done,” I told myself.

Well here we are two years later and I’m back at it again. What could have possibly changed in two years time? I’m still running thanks to my employer John Hancock, the primary sponsor of the race. However, unlike the last time when I was given a list of charities to choose from, this year I am free to choose my own charity (so long as I raise $5,000 instead of the required $1,500 for John Hancock’s pre-chosen charities).

As many of you may know, during 2012 my dad was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma (CLL). We are lucky in that we caught the disease very early. There are no regular symptoms and no treatment is required at present. Regular check-ins are scheduled throughout the year in a cycle often referred to as “watchful waiting.”

While we are grateful for the positive outlook, we know that 1) it could change for reasons that are beyond our control, and 2) other families are not so lucky. In light of these considerations, I have elected to forgo the pre-selected charities to run for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (“LLS”). Taken from their mission: “LLS is the world's largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. LLS funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world and provides free information and support services.” Last October, I participated in LLS’s Light the Night Walk here in Boston and raised almost $1,500. In 2013, I am redoubling my efforts (and my mileage) to make a more significant contribution to their cause. The minimum fundraising requirement is $5,000, but I hope to exceed that goal with your help.

If you would like to make a tax deductible donation to support my run for LLS, you can do so on this page, or by sending a check payable to LLS to my address at 14 Ward St. Apt 2, Boston, MA 02127. Many employers will match charitable contributions, so please keep that in mind when giving.

Thanks for your support. For every donation I will pass one person on the course. So if enough people donate, I just might win this thing*!

*Any statements about winning the Boston Marathon should be considered delusional and are not to be taken seriously.
