BENEFITING: Fairmount Presbyterian Church
In 31 days in March I will attempt to walk 1,000,000 steps (about 16.3 miles per day) to raise money for education for Batey 105 (this is a village in Dominican Republic that I visit 2-3 times each year). I'm not entirely possible that my body will allow this to happen since I've only accomplished this feat of 16.3 miles once in my life that I'm aware of. It's possible that this will slip into April, but the goal is by March 31.
While 16.3 miles a day seems like a lot for you or me, it is nothing extraordinary for the sugar cane workers of Batey 105. Not only do they put this type of mileage on their bodies, but they do it in extreme heat and humidity while handling a machete and carrying cane stalks.
This 16.3 miles also represents the physical distance between Batey 105 and an excellent education in La Romana. This money is being raised for the kids of Batey 105 to begin to get a great education. Currently we are sending 6 students to an institute in La Romana. This will grow to 12 students in April, and we hope to add this opportunity for all children at some point.
The money raised for this will go to Fairmount Presbyterian Church and will be held for Batey 105, specifically for education related expenses for the children. These expenses include: Molly Roach- English tutor and early childhood education teacher. Alianza Institute (English learning institute). Transportation to and from school. A future fund to send elementary students to La Romana for early childhood education (starting in pre-school).
Please consider a donation of $x per mile that I walk in the month of March. The total journey will be just over 500 miles.
