BENEFITING: METAVIVOR RESEARCH AND SUPPORT INC
EVENT DATE: Oct 01, 2016
Katie Campbell was a self-described "Cancer Ninja". She wrote the book (literally) on how to survive and thrive with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. Katie spent her professional career doing human rights work in Africa, working with children and farmers. After being diagnosed with cancer, she became a vocal advocate for young adult cancer fighters and survivors. She was a bright spark. A force to be reckoned with. Katie left her body on August 20, 2016, surrounded by her loved ones. She left behind a community of people who were impacted and inspired by her life. Including me. I was diagnosed with breast cancer a few months before Katie. We met in an online Young Adult Breast Cancer Community and we met for the first time when I handed off my mastectomy supplies for her upcoming surgery. My treatment went as expected. Hers didn't. In honor of Katie, and to continue the fight that she started, I will be running a 5K (http://www.freedomsrun.org/) in my hometown of Shepherdstown, WV to raise money for metastatic breast cancer awareness, research, and support. All funds that I raise will be donated to www.metavivor.org.
