When I was 19, I lost my father to mental illness. I spent years watching him struggle, even when he wanted help, help was difficult to find. In the years since his death I've seen the same struggle play out time and time again for those I love fiercely. It's not right that it takes 6 weeks to get an appointment with a psychiatrist, it's not right that insurance dictates inpatient stay lengths, it's not right that as many people die by suicide each year as do breast cancer, but mental health funding has 1/100th of breast cancer research funding. Asking for help should be the largest hurdle someone suffering from mental illness should have to overcome, being able to find it should be simple. Through awareness and funding we can change that.
