Mindfulness & Amazon Rainforest Education for Children
Organized by: Anne-Marie Charest
SUPPORT OUR INITITATIVES TO BRING MINDFULNESS TO SCHOOLS AND HELP PRESERVE OUR RAINFOREST
A humming bird flaps its wings about 4000 times per minute. During these 60 seconds, 2000 trees are cut down in the rainforest; this represents roughly 4000 football fields per hour. Covering only 6% of the earth’s dry land surface, the rainforest is home to half of the species of animals and plants of the world and an estimate of 50 million tribal people. The rainforest is a fountain of 20% of all the oxygen and unexplored medicinal plants.
The rainforest is far away from the comfort of our homes making it easy to lose perspective of its destruction. We want to create and foster an intimate connection with the rainforest; a connection from which a genuine concern gives way to concrete action to preserve the wellbeing of the rainforest, which is our own wellbeing. With this aim, we have created innerU: Amazon Rainforest Adventure. The goal of this educational program is to teach mindfulness to school children through the exploration of the Amazonian rainforest. Making use of technology with engaging visual content, knowledge about the rainforest, and introspective and interactive learning, children have the opportunity to explore and familiarize themselves with their own inner forest, to develop mindfulness as a tool that cultivates inner peace, and to realize our interconnectedness with plant and animal worlds. This deep connection will naturally spark a desire to care for a distant part of oneself, our rainforest.
