Our Mission

Minds Matter’s mission is to transform the lives of accomplished high school students from low-income families by broadening their dreams and preparing them for college success. We aim to equip underprivileged high school students with the tools to gain acceptance to top-tier academic summer programs and four-year universities, as we believe no student dedicated to earning a college education should be limited by socioeconomic status.

What We Do

We forge relationships with guidance counselors in various schools throughout Boston, who then recommend their top sophomores to attend our program. Those who are interested enter a rigorous application process that includes a written personal statement and an interview. Each accepted student is then paired with two mentors who will work together over the next 3 years. These mentors – college graduates themselves and typically young professionals in the Boston area – become role models to the students and often keep in touch for many years to come.

Beyond strong adult role models, Minds Matter provides numerous resources to its students, including full tuition coverage to top-tier academic summer programs, SAT tutoring through a third-party test prep provider, and access to multiple “experts” on the college application and financial aid process. We also organize field trips, guest speakers, and other special sessions to broaden our students’ horizons and open their eyes to new possibilities.

What Differentiates Us?

Minds Matter targets a specific niche in the Boston community. Our students are stand-outs in the classroom and are driven to succeed academically, but they often lack the resources necessary to realize their full potential. Minds Matter provides a foundation for encouragement and academic enrichment so students can “Dream, Aspire, and Achieve!”

Minds Matter is also unique in that its volunteer base consists entirely of young professionals and graduate students. Not only does Minds Matter provide Boston’s young professionals with the opportunity to make a difference in their communities and to develop important leadership skills, but it teaches young Bostonians to give back at an early age.
