THE STORY:

Mr. E is 55 years old and had lived in his Capitol Heights home his entire life. In June 2011, an arsonist set fire to Mr. E’s home and another home on his block. The other home sustained minor damage but Mr. E’s home was burned down to the brick exterior walls. Everyone survived the fire but, when Mr. E applied to Yachad’s program, 8 of the 9 former residents were still experiencing housing instability, moving between friends’ and family members’ homes because his house was still unlivable.

Mr. E had always been very active in his church and community. After the fire, church members, neighbors, and a state senator rallied together to work on his home and purchase building materials. There was no shortage of people who wanted to help but Mr. E had trouble paying contractors and finding skilled volunteers. He did much of the skilled work himself before he injured his back and developed other health issues. Five and a half years later, the home has walls and some plumbing and electrical work started, but it is still in an unlivable condition. Yachad, in partnership with Youthbuild and Community Forklift, will complete the work on Mr. E’s house, making it a home once again for Mr. E and his family.

Funding is needed to cover supplies, materials and outside professional contractors.
