I joined ART START as a volunteer in January as I was looking to give back to NYC after feeling the amazing power of community that exists here during and after Hurricane Sandy. I was inspired by ART START's mission to nurture the voices, hearts and minds of at-risk youth through creative arts workshops. The workshops take place daily throughout NYC inside homeless shelters. I had visited some of NYC's shelters to deliver aid right after the storm and recognised the importance of igniting hope and light in the spirits of the kids that spend critical years of their youth there.
Since then, once a day every week, I head to the LIFE Shelter for a visual arts workshop where I am surrounded by bright, energetic, talented youth that are excited to be at ART START. Creative pursuits of every form have played a positive role in my life and it's a priviledge to share that with the kids we work with. I go there to give back... but get so much in return.
ART START recently had to cut back the number of workshops as well as release teaching artists that are core to the program. They are working hard to fundraise to bring things back up to speed. I am particularly committed to dedicating my NYC Marathon fundraiser to this inspiring organization so that ART START can continue to bring art to the lives of young people who need it most!
