A B’nai Mitzvah is a coming of age in which a Jewish child becomes a Jewish adult, able to help form a Minyan (prayer group), and in every way considered a spiritual adult, responsible for his or her actions within the Jewish community and the world at large. Bat Mitzvah (Daughter of the Commandments) is both the ceremony observed by girls to celebrate coming of age, and also what the girl becomes, automatically, at the age of 12.I am becoming a Bat Mitzvah on June 21 and 22, and will be reading from the Torah (Jewish Bible) on Saturday Morning. My Torah portion is “Parshat Balak:” among other interesting parables, this portion includes the familiar story of Balaam’s Ass and the Angel of Mercy.
It is required that a Bat Mitzvah perform a mitzvah - a charitable act or community service - as part of the period of preparation. Because investing in girls directly reduces poverty and improves the economic conditions of families, communities, and entire countries, I decided to raise money for the PLAN USA “Because I am a Girl” program devoted to reducing poverty among girls and women.
