war·ri·or- 1. a person engaged or experienced in warfare; soldier 2. a person who shows or has shown great vigor, courage, or perseverance in any human pursuit.
In January 2012, a team of warriors – both conventional and unconventional – will conquer their own physical and mental barriers, climbing to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. Leading the charge will be Kyle Maynard, a mixed martial artist, author, and entrepreneur, born without arms or legs.
Joining Kyle will be a team of individual warriors, including former U.S. military members with injuries ranging from shrapnel wounds to traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress, a former Ugandan soldier who also served with U.S. forces in Iraq, two former record-holding college athletes, and an experienced expedition leader with multiple Kilimanjaro summits to his credit. For each, outdoor activity has played a pivotal role in overcoming disabilities, both real and perceived, and in forging connections to people from all walks of life and cultures. These warriors have defied adversity, refusing to be victims of their circumstances and discovering the power of their own potential in choosing to push through barriers rather than giving up. The team is united in a desire to demonstrate what is possible to achieve in the face of seemingly overwhelming limitations.
Mission Kilimanjaro will begin with an expedition to poverty-stricken areas of Tanzania. Using elements of play, sports, and building community roles, Kyle and the Team Kilimanjaro warriors will connect with children dealing with the difficulties of living with a disability in a third-world country. The goal is to inspire human beings separated by an ocean yet connected by their willingness to confront adversity, overcoming perceived physical and mental limitations and transforming perspectives of what is possible through a no-barriers mindset along the way.
The mission will culminate with one of the ultimate outdoor activities – the team’s summiting of Mt. Kilimanjaro. With the summit, Kyle Maynard will become the first quadruple amputee to climb the fourth highest peak of the Seven Summits without assistance.
Are you ready to overcome your barriers in reaching your highest potential?
