MLT Foundation #RunforKaels_SFMarathon
Organized by: Matt Cooper
EVENT DATE Jul 27, 2014
This fundraising effort holds such significance to me and everyone touched by the MLT Foundation. The San Francisco Marathon takes place on July 27th 2014, which is the exact year anniversary of Mikaela’s passing. The MLT Charitable Foundation, is an approved 501(c)3 non-profit organization that was created in the loving memory of Mikaela Lauren Tick. Her life was tragically cut short this past summer after an unexpected turn during open-heart surgery. She was born with a rare heart condition called, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), which causes abnormal thickening in the heart muscles. Mikaela was a special woman who worked so efficiently in life being able to positively impact and touch the lives of so many individuals in her all too short 24 years. She was dedicating her life to the field of Occupational Therapy, pursuing a degree at NYU Steinhardt. Helping individuals with special needs was always Mikaela’s passion and become an occupational therapist was her dream. Mikaela had an ability to break all social barriers and interact with special needs individuals in a way that was so comfortable and natural. She made them feel confident, accepted and inspired to reach their functional potential. When we spoke about her career and dreams of opening up her own private practice these were some of the things she shared with me. The mission of the MLT Foundation is to carry out Mikaela's vision, to empower individuals with special needs through occupational therapy services. The MLT Foundation will be working with St. Mary's Healthcare System for Children in order to continue Mikaela’s work and keep her memory alive. St. Mary's is one of the nation's premier providers of intensive rehabilitation and specialized care for children with special needs and life limiting conditions. Each day St. Mary’s provides intensive rehabilitation, specialized care, and education to children throughout the New York metropolitan area. At St. Mary’s we believe all children have the ability and right to thrive, to dream, and to be the beautiful individuals they are. We believe in our children’s inspiring resilience. We decided to work with St. Mary's for the many reason listed above but also it is a place where Mikaela actually worked with Children during one of their summer programs called Camp Helping Hands. After my first fundraising effort we were able to raise $23,866 and this money was in turn contributed to the St. Mary’s “Camp Helping Hands.” With the initial funds raised, the MLT Foundation was able to sponsor 6 children who would have never had the financial means to attend this camp and benefit from all that it has to offer. Camp Helping Hands is a summer camp program that offers children intensive therapy 5-6 hours per day, with age-appropriate play and adaptive skills practice. All funds raised from this fundraising effort will go directly to the MLT Foundation and will have a direct impact on children in need of occupational therapy services. Thank you in advance for all that you are doing to support this foundation and for keeping Mikaela's spirit and dreams alive.
