Harper Gruzins is a singer/ songwriter from Coppell, Texas. Last year, at age 11, Harper sang a rendition of the National Anthem for a soccer game in front of 20,000 people. It was not her best performance. Harper had difficulty hearing herself and was a little bit off key due to the loud background noise. The media ignored the young lady's bravery for being able to sing in front of thousands of people and quickly began scrutinizing her for her poor performance. Harper became the victim of an immense amount of cyber bullying. Through it all, Harper stayed strong. She new that music was her passion and she refused to give up because of one bad performance.
“It wasn’t my best performance because I couldn’t hear myself and the blowhorns got me off key,” Harper told FoxNews.com. “But God allowed this to happen, so I know it’s what he wants. So I wouldn’t change it. Next time I hope there’s no blowhorns.”
Melissa Mulligan is the owner of MMVS, a vocal studio in Fairfield, CT. Melissa discovered Harper's story and was moved by her passion and determination. Melissa befriended Harper on facebook to offer support and guidance.
"The first time I Skyped with Harper I knew that she was special." recalls Mulligan. "Then I talked with her parents for at least an additional half hour and got the chills several times. I felt like I was meeting friends for life, like this was all meant to be."
For 6 months, now, Melissa has been doing Skype lessons with Harper, but has yet to meet her in person.
A year after Harper sang the national anthem, she has been cast in the show iShine on the KNECT channel. The show is a high energy variety show just for tweens. Each episode talks about identity with topics such as faith, parents, modesty and friends.
THANK YOU, FROM MELISSA:
When I shared Harper's story with the MMVS community, my team became inspired to do everything they could to help fight the bullying epedemic that is plauging our country. We look forward to helping this organization, bonding with each other and singing for you during our 48 hours on the road! Thank you for your generosity and for being a part of our amazing journey!
