FoundationKibii, will organize on the 22, 23 and 24 September 2017 the 5th edition of the Moengo Festival, with the theme “Pee fuwini II (perform to win)”. The goal of this festival is to improve awareness in the area of art and culture by means of extending stage art 60% of the funding for the festival in 2017 is already collected, this was possible through the support of our partners the French Embassy in Suriname, Surinamese Alcoholic Company and Alliance Francaise in Suriname. But unfortunately we do not have enough to build the festival to the last detail. Therefore, we will use this crowdfunding for the technical setup and support of the festival. The foundationKibii, was initiated by visual artist Marcel Pinas in 2009, and focuses on the conserving and the development of rich traditional culture heritage of theMaroon community in Suriname. This foundation inspires and stimulates the development of artistic talent of young people. The goal of this foundation is to organize art and cultural projects that improves community development in Moengo and neighbouring district Marowijne in Suriname. Next to it, the foundation focuses on international acknowledgement, protection, and appreciation of this rich culture. Moengo, which is now a post-industrial city, needs an alternative, since the bauxite industry no longer exists with the departure of Suralco. This company played a huge role in providing in jobs for the community, and thereby an income. This is a great challenge for the foundation, creating a sustainable alternative for Moengo on economic and social level. The foundation aims to do this by: Investing in children and young people; Utilizing art and culture in an innovative way; Using the enterprising ability of artists; Giving the past a future from the “Kibii wi koni” Maroon research center. The organization realizes its goals through various projects including the large-scale Moengo festival, now again for the fifth time. With the fourth edition, 8,000 visitors attended. This indicates a Growth of over 150% compared to the first edition in 2013 where 3,000 visitors attended to . This festival contributes development opportunities to young people from Moengo and surroundings and places Moengo on the tourist map of Suriname. The sustainability of this festival will be realized, by making an annual recurring event and having a preand post course. At the Moengo Festival of Theater & Dance 2017, the pre- and postcourse aims to stimulate the artistic talents of local artists. It is realized through trainings by trainers and professionals who have been in the field for years. For this festival, a collaboration with Stephen Rahan (well-known dramatist), which produced the play "Jopie, Black national boy, now a Prime Minister" in 2015. Also, the Kibii Foundation initiated a collaboration in 2017 with the Academy of Theater and Dance of the Amsterdam High School for the Arts (AHK), which will contribute to the Moengo festival of Theater and Dance with the involvement of trainees and alumni. Both organizations have expressed their intention to expand this cooperation in the coming years Why theatre and dance? Foundation Kibii is convinced that the practicing of theatre and dance influences young people positive on physical, emotional, and social level. It contributes to the increasing of appreciation of art and culture. The festival has great value on young theatre makers and dancers, because it gives them an acceptable chance to learn from and with professionals. By making use ofjoint workshops with the focus on connection, different motivation such as art will be turn into educational means or to highlight social issue. Intern program The Moengo Festival has provided the possibility this year for internees to do their internship and work with professionals. The intern program consists of 3 components: 1. Exchange of ideas -‐ The progress ( from May 2017) of the festival serves as a platform for the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and experience between locals and international dance--- and theatre makers 2. Concept development-‐ three months prior to the festival (from July to September 2017) workshops and master classes will be taught to young local theatre makers and dancers, were they will be taught on how to teach the community based on their talent and context. 3. Production -‐ As the last component, the Moengo festival offers interested in theatre and dance the chance to work together with professionals to produce a presentation In order to make the knowledge we transfer through the workshops more sustainable, we do not only want to involve young people at the workshops this year as participants, but also train some of them to provide workshops themselves.
