BENEFITING: MINDS MATTER
Hey everyone I'm Mohammed Rashed, I am a junior in the Denver Center for International Studies. Ever since I was a young kid my dream was to go to college and if I did I would be the first in my family to do so. My family is originally from Libya which is located in Northern Africa. My parents decided to come to the United States in search for a better life for my siblings and I. Both my parents are very hard workers and have always provided to me everything they could offer. They would push me and motivate me to do my best in school in order to graduate with good grades and earn a scholarship. Yet being a first generation kid going to a public high school was tough for me. At many points i my had hesitations of continuing high school. It was hard for me I didn't understand the material and I had no one at home to help me, but I always remembered the reason my parents sacrificed so much for me and that was for me to earn a college degree. The summer before highs school I went to visit Libya. During my stay there the libyan civil war erupted and forced my family to stay there the whole year. I was forced to attend school there. Schools in Libya were terrible they had corporal punishment, decading school building, and harsh student conditions. After a year we were able to come back to the USA where I came to appreciate the level of education offered here. There was a small problem and that was college is coming closer and I had no plan I was lost. I didn't even know if I wanted to go to college anymore. This was until I found out about. Minds Matter Denver. MMD is a nonprofit organization that helps financially challenged students get into college and universities. This opportunity changed my life. They were able to help me raise my grades to a 4.2 GPA and allow me to push myself to take multiple AP classes. This summer I was presented with the opportunity of going to a summer program at a university to learn more about college life and the majors I would be interested in studying. So I am fundraising to attend University of Florida summer program for high school students. Hopefully by the end of this trip I will have gained experience on college and learned more about the majors I'm intersted in. So thank you to everyone who helps me achieve this goal and helps me make it across the stage and earn my diploma.
