GROW YOUR YOGA is an off-the-mat challenge taking place May 1st – 30th, 2013 that brings together the entire Global Moksha Yoga community as we deepen our yoga practice. Moksha is founded on 7 Pillars, a set of ideas and philosophies that we try to live by, and these form the basis of 4 weekly off-the-mat challenges:

Be Heathly, Be Peace, Be Accessible, Reach Out

The challenges encourage participants to eat well, seek peace, communicate kindly with others, and reach out to support their communities. Each year, GROW YOUR YOGA supports a different organization, and for 2013, our goal is to raise $100,000 for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, an organization that creates sustainable economic benefits for the Maasai people by preserving regional ecosystems and cultural heritage.

So reach out, GROW YOUR YOGA, and change the world!

Moksha Yoga is a holistic form of hot yoga which mixes elements from several styles of yoga including Hatha, Vinyasa, and Ashtanga. Practiced in a heated room to stimulate detoxification, the Moksha series features forty therapeutic postures that focus on gentle strengthening, mindful breathing, and positive intentions. The Moksha lifestyle runs much deeper than just a set of postures though.  Based on our Seven Pillars -- seven core philosophies that serve as the framework for a life of mindful and compassionate living -- Moksha provides a welcoming community for those continuing to make positive changes both on and off the mat.

The Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust (MWCT) works to protect the legendary ecosystems and astounding biodiversity of East Africa through conservation that directly benefits local Maasai communities.

MWCT’s efforts are focused on the Maasai communities and landscapes of Kenya’s Chyulu Hills, within the world-famous Amboseli-Tsavo Ecosystem. These are Hemingway’s “Green Hills of Africa,” covered by deep cloud forests that loom over the savannah, teeming with wildlife, and with Mt. Kilimanjaro rising out of the plains. The Maasai communities of this area own all of the land between the protected National Parks, and within their land lie critical wildlife migration corridors and habitat reserves, forests that are carbon sinks and rivers and springs that supply the fresh water not only to this ecosystem but to more than 7 million people in Kenya, including the 2nd largest city, Mombasa.

MWCT funds and operates programs that promote sustainable economic benefits through conserving this ecosystem. Lease payments for conservancy zones, carbon credits, payments for watershed protection, sustainable eco-tourism, wildlife monitoring and security, conservation and tourism employment — these are just some of the ways the organization is creating a cutting edge model of successful community-based conservation. And these benefits go where the community needs them most: education and health programs.
