Last March I was privileged to travel to the Dominican Republic for a week during spring break. I traveled with fellow Virginia Tech students to work with the Community Service Alliance. While there we worked with residents affected by HIV and AIDS all living near El Seibo, Dominican Republic in the southern part of the island.

The project included installing water filters in homes of those affect by the virus. It also was part of an ongoing mission to promote good health, safety, and sanitation education. In a country where there are no formal sanitation practices (For example the DR doesn’t have a trash system) this project did wonders for people. We also planted family gardens that would replenish and serve families and towns for years to come.

Traveling to the Dominican Republic changed my world for the better. In so many applications I see its affects. From applying strategies I learned such as figuring out what works for people in the DR and how that would not work for residents in the states and vice versa, being able to think nonlinearly and abstract was challenging and yet beneficial since the day I came back. I saw the barriers people had to break on a daily basis just to survive and the results of exclusion because of social stigmas and a strong lack of resources that is less than imaginable.

The impact this trip had on me is larger than I think I will ever know. In one week, I met some of the most inspiring and strong people in my life, changed the lives of many, cried, laughed, became speechless, felt empowered, got proposed to and learned absolutely nothing is impossible.

On March 9-17 I will embark on my second journey to work with CSA. As part of the program, we have to help pay for supplies we will be using to build gardens and water filters as well as traveling expenses. The total program cost will be around $1,600. $1,000 will go towards program costs and the left over $600 is for my plane ticket.

Even the smallest amount helps ! Thank you to everyone who donates, I promise to return with engagingly hilarious and life changing stories! (As well as pictures g’lore)
