Mom Love 2016

BENEFITING: Abriendo Mentes

THE STORY:

Mother's Day is May 8th. In honor of this special day, we are running a campaign to raise much needed funds for our womens's programming in Costa Rica. By making a donation, you are helping to support local moms, who do so much for their families and always put themselves last. Help us put them first this Mother's Day with donation to Abriendo Mentes.

$25 -- Your donation of $25 will pay for a zumba class for 30 local women in Potrero. Local women have few affordable options for exercise. Furthermore, many local moms have very busy schedules taking care of their children and keeping up with the cooking, cleaning and laundry, on top of having a full time job. Many of these families live in poverty and have the additional stress of struggling to make ends meet financially each month. These women have few opportunities to take time for themselves. Zumba has become an incredibly popular program because it gives local women an opportunity to focus on their personal health and fitness, while also allowing them a little bit of "me time".

$50 -- Your donation of $50 will provide computer classes for 15 women. Computer skills are a much sought after ability in the local tourism market. Some of our students turn on a computer for the first time in our classroom. Studies have shown that womens' incomes are invested in their families: in education, healthcare, food and clothing. By investing in womens' computer skills, you are helping them to increase their employability in the local job market. This will then provide much needed income for their families.

$75 -- Your donation of $75 will provide English classes for 20 women. English classes help local women increase a very important linguistic skill that is required to work in the local tourist industry. Well paying tourism jobs are ample in the community but most higher paying, long term positions require a high level of English. Many local women dropped out of high school to begin working or to have children, and as a result, never finished their studies and have very limited English skills. By taking classes with Abriendo Mentes, women are working towards increasing their fluency to attain better employment opportunities in order to be able to better support their families.

$100 -- Your donation of $100 will cover one month of our food bank program. Abriendo Mentes is proud to partner with the Banco de Alimentos, a local food bank that distributes food to local nonprofits. In Portrero and Brasilito, each month 25 families receive a box of food staples and household items including rice, beans, sugar, oil, soap, detergent, etc. Some of the families who receive this assistance are working full time but are still struggling to make ends meet as the result of low wages and very high cost of living. Other families in the program live in extreme poverty and the food box is one of their few sources of food during the entire month. By supporting the food bank program, you are providing great relief to a mother who may not be sure where her family's next meal is coming from.
