Growing up in rural Appalachia, my mother has endured a legacy of poverty, abuse, & crippling depression. In her nature, she is strong, kind, & passionate, always sacrificing to help those less fortunate than she. She taught me to see the beautify in the world & the good in people. She has a child's heart, full of light & love. She took these virtues & escaped that angry, nowhere town when she hitchhiked to Los Angeles. There she became politically active, fighting fervently for workers' & women's rights. She became a Good Will Ambassador to China in talks for peace & equality. She is an artist, finding self-expression through pottery, painting, drawing, & weaving. Always reading, she has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. She is a magical & truly inspiring spirit. She wanted only to make this world a better, more just place.
She brought this same passion to motherhood. Adoring & affectionate, she always wanted the best for us. Yet her emotional traumas & inherited demons weighed too heavily on her soul. Depression began to tighten its deadly grip on her. My father, unable to save her, took custody of us. We watched her deteriorate. Through a series of hardships & minor successes, we have watched her struggle to merely subsist.
When I moved to California, I invited her to live with me & offered to help her get back on her feet. Overjoyed, she vowed she would be on my doorstep in 2 weeks time. That was 4 years ago, this April. Through this process, I have seen how depression has immobilized her. Her pain has anchored her to a life of suffering & stagnancy.
Her health is deteriorating. She now has a 2 year old grandson. She wants nothing more than to be near us. I am securing housing through local assistance programs & compiling community outreach resources. The only thing lacking is the funds. By my calculations, $5000 would midestly cover the cost of relocating her to Santa Cruz, where she can be closer to myself, my partner, & her grandson. Here, we can help her remember her joyful spirit & unlimited possibilities. She deserves a chance at peace & happiness while she is still on this planet. Suggestions of resources are welcome. Every penny will help give this beautiful being a fresh chance at life.
