BENEFITING: FAMILIES FIRST INC
Since 2008, Moms For Moms/Families First RI, (a grassroots, non-profit organization )has been supporting mothers and families in Rhode Islands. The mission of Families First is to address the challenges of postpartum depression as well as the anxiety and isolation that can accompany the birth of a child. The Families First program has three components: first, the initial psychiatric evaluation of a mom; second, matching a mom with a volunteer mentor who commits to weekly home visits for a period of up to one year; and third, our monthly social and educational gatherings for moms and their families. Our services are free of charge and are designed to help any mother regardless of socioeconomic status, age, and martial status, ethnic or cultural group. Families First RI is focused on helping families, many of which are at or below the poverty level, to gain confidence and promote an understanding and awareness of postpartum issues. The foundation of the program rests on a growing group of dedicated volunteer moms who are recruited, trained, supervised, and matched as mentors to mothers in need of support. Our mentors’ aim is to provide emotional and social support while simultaneously connecting the mothers with resources in their own communities. The goal is to address the unmet needs in the areas of maternal and child health, behavioral health, nutrition, safety, education, and development.
