BENEFITING: Outreach Mission Support
Outreach Mission Support (OMS) also seeks to help African immigrants in and around the Monmouth, Illinois area.
Many families have come to the region for jobs at large employers such as Smithfield Foods in Monmouth. If, for any number of reasons, they are no longer employed at Smithfield, these families (many with small children) have to uproot their families and look for work elsewhere.
OMS is working to help these families stay put and keep their children in school, at least until that time when they are are comfortable in their newly adopted country.
One specific service OMS hopes to provide is a transportation service, allowing Monmouth (and area) Africa immigrants to carpool to other employment locations in the larger region.
Plants like Smithfield (or the Cargill plant in Beardstown) are often the only places these immigrants can work effectively - they do not need solid English language skills to be effective. As a result, often many employees from one town all travel to work at the same location.
OMS is seeking $10,000 to purchase a minivan to be able to offer transportation assistance (to and from work) to these immigrant workers who have jobs outside of the Monmouth community.
Riders will pay a nominal fee of $20/week to cover the gas and maintenance costs of the van.
By providing this service, OMS will allow the families to remain where they are, in a safe, low-cost community with other African immigrants, but most importantly, their children can stay in school. This stability will allow these families to normalize into their new country and learn how to be effective citizens.
