BENEFITING: CRISSY FIELD DOG GROUP INC
Stretching from Pacifica to Half Moon Bay, CA, the coastside is a tight-knit community of dog-lovers. For decades, local residents have enjoyed hiking and playing fetch with their dogs in the open hills around our homes. Many of us walk these community trails everyday with our dogs, not only for the exercise, but for the positive exchanges and joy in experiencing nature and community with our dogs.
In January 2011, the federal government came in and took control of this 4,000 acres of open space lands known as Rancho Corral de Tierra. Now a part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), the ability to hike and recreate with dogs on these lands is on the chopping block.
If the federal government gets its way, dogs could be banned completely from Rancho, except for a few trails in Montara and El Granada, as soon as fall of 2016.
The most important lesson we've learned is that we need to fight this fight in the legal arena. In partnership with Crissy Field Dog Group, Montara Dog Group has been working with an attorney specializing in this area of NEPA law (federal land use law).
Our attorney has reviewed and provided specialized comments on thousands of pages of NEPA documents put out by GGNRA; helped with the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors' effort to oppose GGNRA's preferred dog management plan alternative; jumped into action when GGNRA arbitrarily tried to ban dogs from the Moss Beach section of Rancho; and has and continues to work closely with Congresswoman Speier’s office to address community concerns.
Thanks to his efforts, we are setting the stage for a possible challenge to GGNRA's dog management plan once it is released in late 2016.
We hope you will join us in supporting this important effort to keep GGNRA coastside lands dog-friendly. We can’t do it without you. All donations are tax-deductible and will be sent to Montara Dog Group's nonprofit partner, Crissy Field Dog Group.
