BENEFITING: MONTGOMERY CO FAM JUSTICE CTR FOUNDATION INC
Vanessa* was married to an abusive husband. Emotional and financial abuse had been a constant in her marriage. Vanessa’s husband controlled all of their finances and told her that he “owns her, she is worthless and she could never leave him or survive on her own” on a regular basis. Vanessa came to the Family Justice Center(FJC) seeking assistance to escape her abusive marriage following an argument that escalated into physical violence and threats against her life.
Vanessa worked with a Victim's Assistant to develop a safety plan. She obtained Protective Orders against her husband, from the security of the FJC; through a video conference link with the Circuit Court. She and her 5 children also received free counseling.
The number one reason for a woman to return to an abusive relationship is lack of financial resources. It would have been impossible for Vanessa to support her family with a job paying minimum wage.
Vanessa received career counseling and learned that education leads to financial empowerment. The Foundation worked with Montgomery College to provide a scholarship so that “Vanessa” could receive of education that would provide her with a secure financial future where she and her children will sustain a life free of domestic violence.
Vanessa graduated college a year ago and secured a job that enables her to provide for her family without relying on an abuse partner. PLEASE, help us provide support and guidance for other women like Vanessa so they too can become survivors of domestic violence and financial abuse.
