Wait. What are you doing again?
On October 13th 2013, I'm going to attempt the 12 mile Tough Mudder obstacle course in a full bear costume.
Why on earth would you do that?
To raise funds and awareness to help moon bears that are used in the bear bile trade.
What's the bear bile trade?
In Asia, bear bile is used in traditional Chinese medicines, even though there are many natural, cruelty-free alternatives. Most of this bile comes from bears that are confined for decades in cage so small that they can’t even turn around or stand up. Bile is taken from them through a tube inserted in their gall bladder.
Wow. That's horrible. Is anything being done to help these bears?
Yes. An non-profit organization named Animals Asia has been working to end the bear farming industry and to date has rescued over 400 bears from this life of misery. You can find out more at http://www.animalsasia.org.
How can I help?
Please click the "Donate" button. Any amount you can contribute is so important and appreciated enormously. All of the money will help Animals Asia purchase much needed medical equipment to help heal these bears that have suffered so much. Three lucky donors, chosen at random, will win their very own, and very cute, moon teddy bear, plus a DVD of the brilliant documentary "Moon Bear: Journey to Freedom".
What's this RYOT Challenge?
On September 24th, the Top 3 fundraisers will receive between $25,000 and $75,000 in prize money for their charity. To get there, I think we need to raise at least $100,000.
Can you swim, climb, and run 12 miles in a bear costume?
Probably not, but there's only one way to find out. Either way it should make for a good you-tube video.
