THE STORY:

Michigan Peace Team, Inc. wrote -

Dear Friends,
Those of you who know us personally know how important the peace teams that MPT places here in the United States are to the two of us. As a friend to MPT, you recognize with us that violence is not something that just happens “over there”. We both know that violence is right here and it's just as important that we do this work “in our own back yard”.
Can Peace Teams be used to back our neighborhoods away from violence? Mitigate the “spill over” violence when hate groups are confronted by those who protest with violence? Create accountability for police violence? We at MPT believe it can....And we’ve seen it work!
In just a few short weeks, we have a wonderful opportunity to share what we've learned with others from across the United States who are also trying to do violence intervention work... and best of all, we have the opportunity to learn from each other! On September 14th - 16th, people representing organizations from across the U.S. who seek to train and place domestic peace teams will come together in Portland, Oregon to share our collective experiences, learn from one another, and make some decisions about “best practices” for skills training and team placements. Plus (and how cool is this?), the curriculum we will be using as a jumping off point was written for Nonviolent Peaceforce by MPT trainers! But this important summit meeting was called after MPT had set it 2012 Budget...So without your help, we won't be able to be there.
One of the biggest tasks in placing a successful Peace Team – whether internationally or “domestically” (within the U.S.) is effective training. Thanks to our amazing community of donors, trainers, volunteers and staff, Michigan Peace Team is renowned for the quality of its nonviolence skills training program and our domestic peace teams. And we are determined to hold fast to any opportunity we have to share these skills, to learn from others, and to consistently improve our curriculum.
We really need to be at this meeting! Will you help us get there? We need to raise $1,500 for travel costs, housing and the costs of the meeting. Your donation will make all the difference. Please consider being a part of this important meeting with us! Donations should be earmarked “Best Practices meeting" and sent to Michigan Peace Team at 808 W. Barnes Ave. Lansing, MI 48910. Or you may donate electronically via our website: To donate on-line, go to www.michiganpeaceteam.org/ and click on the "Donate Now" button (adding "Best Practices meeting" to the Designation box).
Please help make sure MPT is at this historic gathering.
We thank you in advance for making this happen, and for your continued participation in this important work! We look forward to sharing with you what we have learned when we return, and continuing to improve our program!
In Peace and with Deep Gratitude,
Mary Hanna and Sheri Wander
