BENEFITING: Daraja Education Fund
EVENT DATE: May 18, 2014
The organization Human Right's Watch says that "out of the world's estimated 130 million out of school youth, 70% are girls." This is a sobering statistic and a fact that is readily evident in Kenya where public school ends at grade 8 and families able to afford an education beyond that will pay for their son, not their daughter, to attend school. Girls are more valuable for their bride price and most are married off - sometimes as young as age 13 - in exchange for livestock, thus denying them any opportunity to explore their potential.
Daraja Academy provides girls with high academic achievement and leadership potential a full four-year secondary school scholarship and half-year residential transition program which prepares students for univeristy or the career of their choice. Daraja is more than just a school, it is a bridge to opportunity.
