Organized by: Morinne Osborne
February 22, 2016
EVENT DATE May 08, 2016
The trip to Oaxaca, Mexico is a study opportunity that is offered to students of Howard University who are minoring or majoring in Spanish. The Department of World Languages and Culture at Howard University will be sending their students to the Universidad del Mar in Oaxaca (UMAR) where I will be taking Oral Expression II and a Reading/Writing Workshop course. While in Oaxaca, I will be staying with a host family, allowing me to be fully immersed in southern Mexican culture. I will also be traveling to visit renown Indigenous archeological sites as well as visit ancient ruins and temples that are scattered throughout the country.
The university that Howard is partnered with in Mexico, UMAR, allows for undergraduate Howard students to earn credit while abroad. The program is five weeks, May 8, 2016 until June 12, 2016. The cost of tuition and additional fees at UMAR is $3,700, which does not include the cost of traveling to and from Oaxaca, which is more than $1,000. Additional fees include food for dinner and the weekends and any other miscellaneous items.
As someone who is interested in pursuing a career in the medical field, I see the value and importance of learning first hand about other people cultures as well as their language. This opportunity will not only enhance my cultural development but my social, professional and leadership development as well.
To aid in my educational development, I need your support. I invite you to join my family and friends in donating money that will go directly towards the program cost, flight, food, and any extra expenses needed for the program. The total cost of everything is as follows:
