Inspiring literacy, building friendship
We're establishing English libraries in under-resourced communities in Morocco. There's rapidly expanding interest in English in this part of the world, but up to now, very few resources to make it possible. In some areas where we work, there have been no libraries of any kind, so this project is a enormous boost to both English literacy and a broader love of learning. We are also extending a hand of peace and friendship between the US and this wonderful country in North Africa.
We work directly with teachers in Morocco who are giving their own time to run popular after-school English classes and clubs. The students are all ages and all reading levels -- but every one of them is passionate about studying and broadening their knowledge of the world.
What We've Accomplished So Far
This past year, we developed a successful library (our "pilot project") in the city of Erfoud, close to the Algerian border. The library is a huge success in its community and has been getting attention by teachers and communities all over the country! One year ago, young people in Erfoud were studying English without a single book -- and today they have a comprehensive library, with something of interest for everyone. We provided books, games, and other materials, along with funding for furniture and repairs -- and local high school students fixed up the room, painted it, and turned it into the beautiful and popular library it is today! This is a model of cooperation that we would like to replicate.
Please help us keep this going!!
What's Next -- and Why We Need Your Help
In summer and fall of 2015, we're raising funds to:
- Begin new libraries in Taroudant and Tetouan. Like Erfoud, these libraries will be comprehensive, with a broad range of literature, nonfiction such as science and nature, and a variety of games and puzzles. The library in Taroudant will be used by several middle schools, high schools, and English clubs in the area; and the library in Tetouan will be at a girls' high school.
- Send more books to Erfoud. With the popularity of this new library, the English program in Erfoud has expanded to include younger students and beginners in English. The library has 650 books, but not many for new learners yet, so we are sending more children's books and beginning readers.
- Help with shipping to a new library in Rabat. In partnership with us, the public library in Mancos, Colorado, has volunteered to be a "sister library" to an English club in Rabat, Morocco (which already has 170 students). The Mancos team is organizing a great collection of books, and we're supporting their kind effort by helping with shipping.
How We Do It
We purchase many of the books ourselves so that we get exactly what is needed, and some are given to us as donations. Shipping expenses are considerable, and we also help the communities with furniture and room repairs. Everything is done in consultation with teachers on location, so we are sure to send what is truly needed. A public school in Morocco donates a space for the library, and volunteers in the community do the work of turning it into a library.
This is truly a cross-world collaboration.
Donations Are Tax-Deductible
The Morocco Library Project operates under the fiscal sponsorship of the 501c(3) United Charitable Programs, so your donation is tax-deductible and the funds are carefully managed and accounted for. All work on both sides of the planet is done by volunteers, so every dollar goes into the libraries.
Thank you for helping support literacy, friendship, and peace!
