BENEFITING: MOSAIC COMMUNITY SERVICES INC
Mosaic’s employment fund provides the support clients need to seek, secure, and retain employment. Earning a paycheck and managing money are important factors in recovery—they bring normalcy to life, provide social opportunities, and reinforce the successes of setting and reaching goals. The employment fund allows Mosaic’s job coaches and benefits counselors to work with clients for as long as necessary, instead of time-bound coaching provided by more traditional employment programs.
Megan moved into Mosaic’s residential program when she was 21; she has her eyes set on living independently by her 28th birthday. Her job as a hostess at Bob Evans is a critical component to achieving her goal. “I am learning a lot of social skills,” explains Megan, “which is great for me, because I tend to be really socially awkward.” Megan and her colleagues share laughs and chores, from telling jokes when the crowds are slow, to washing handprints off the windows and bussing tables when crowds are busy.
Megan tries to save the bulk of each paycheck, building her savings account to prepare for eventually moving into a studio apartment. In the meantime, she is not only building her resume at Bob Evans, but has a plan to start managing her own medications, calling in prescriptions, and figuring out the rules and regulations about 401K plans and disability benefits. At 22, she has plenty of time to figure it out.
