BENEFITING: MOTHERS2MOTHERS INTERNATIONAL INC
Each day, approximately 800 children are infected with HIV.
90% of these children live in sub-Saharan Africa, and most acquire HIV from their mothers during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.
It’s unacceptable… it’s tragic… because it’s almost entirely preventable.
Effective and inexpensive medical interventions are available that can keep mothers healthy and babies HIV-free. Yet the stigma of HIV and a severe shortage of doctors and nurses is sub-Saharan Africa make it difficult for many women to get the care they need.
mothers2mothers (m2m) is changing that. We train, employ, and empower mothers living with HIV to work alongside doctors and nurses in understaffed health clinics. These inspirational “Mentor Mothers” -- like 24-year-old Emily Akinyi Orinda from Kenya (read Emily’s story here) –use their first-hand knowledge of HIV to provide essential health education and support to other HIV-positive mothers on how to protect their babies from HIV and keep themselves healthy. The employment helps Mentor Mothers become financially secure, making them role models in their communities and reducing stigma and discrimination associated with HIV.
With your support, we can meet our goal for the Skoll Foundation Social Entrepreneurs Challenge of raising $25,000 (or £15,000 for our friends in the UK), which would pay for one m2m site for one year in sub-Saharan Africa, bringing health and hope to hundreds of HIV-positive women and their babies. Your support can also unlock some of the $1 million in prize money that the generous folks at the Skoll Foundation have pledged to organisations that do well in this challenge.
Please donate or become a member of our fundraising team today. Together we can create an HIV-free generation!
