I have been in Rach Gia, Kien Giang, Vietnam for the past 4 weeks volunteering with the Catalyst Foundation. During that time I have been getting to know many of the staff members here and of course the children. I have already gained so much perspective on the life I had/have in the US. Even just the joy on the kids faces to see us was an experience in itself.
One particular staff member that I have gotten to know well is Chi Hoang (she lives in the same staff house as me). She is the program manager here at the school. She is always working, at all hours of the day, and even some times forgets to eat. Often times she even forfeits her salary when the school needs something.
Currently, our means of transportation to and from school is a motorbike owned by Catalyst to visit the community and garbage dumps. That motorbike is about 20 years old. We are told that it can run but its life is nearing its end (it died once while I was driving it, scary!). So Caroline, the director, has approved a purchase of a new motorbike for the school. However, Chi Hoang being her selfless self never lets Catalyst spend money if she can give her salary first, which is a whole $450 dollars a month. She is giving up 2 months of her salary to purchase the motorbike for the school.
So, to prevent that from happening I am reaching out to friends and family for donations. I hope to raise enough money to purchase the motorbike before she can. I understand summer is coming up and I am sure everyone is planning their vacations. But any size donation is a helpful donation!
