Organized by: Motown Montessori
Motown Montessori has been open for 27 years serving hundreds, if not thousands, of families. The school offers childcare and preschool in the Midtown Detroit area for a diverse community of children age six weeks through six years. As one of the very few Montessori schools within the city limits and the only one in Midtown Detroit, students not only become academically prepared for elementary school, but they also learn to be independent, curious, compassionate about differences in others, and respectful of the environment.
Over the past year and a half, under previous administrative leadership, Motown Montessori experienced serious financial mismanagement that has adversely affected the financial stability of the school and left it with a large amount of debt. The Board of Directors terminated employment of the previous leadership staff in April of this year, hired an Interim Director, and has temporarily taken over many financial operations of the school in order to reorganize the school’s administrative functions.
In addition, the school needs urgent facility improvements to the former DPS Burton International Elementary School, where it has been located for over five years. Some of these improvements are required by State licensing in order to continue to provide care to children under 30 months of age, a great need in the community.
Right now we have about 60 children enrolled and approximately a dozen on our waiting list. We cherish each and every one of these children. These financial challenges are causing Motown Montessori to face possible closure, which would displace its families and leave a huge gap for high-quality childcare and development in Detroit. Our goal is to raise $15,000 by June 30, 2016 to build a required emergency exit ramp to sustain current enrollment, and an additional $25,000 throughout the summer to allow us to be sustainable until the enrollment bump that will happen in the Fall. We believe that Motown Montessori is an asset to all of our families, to the Midtown community and to Detroit, which is why we are seeking support to get us over this temporary hurdle.
Your generous donations will not only help keep the doors open, but will help Motown Montessori provide a safe, energetic, loving, learning environment for the children of this community.
