BENEFITING: MOUNTAIN PARK ENVIRONMENTAL ASSOCIATION
The Mountain Park Environmental Center, located in beautiful Beulah Valley, is constructing a greenhouse to improve our award winning Earth Studies Program. The new greenhouse will provide an experiential component to better implement our recently updated curriculum to now include climate/weather studies.
The Earth Studies program provides a hands on, boots-on-the-ground experience for all 5th grade students who attend Pueblo School District #60 schools - around 1300 19- and 11-year-olds. Students will be able to experience four full day sessions for the 2017-2018 academic year. Our new climate/weather lessons provides introduce such topics as the greenhouse effect, the carbon cycle, climate and weather, and carbon foot prints. With the successful completion of a Quonset (hoop house) style greenhouse, students will be able to take temperature readings inside and outside of the greenhouse and be able to compare real time data that they took themselves!
Although our current primary focus for erecting a greenhouse is for education, we hope to expand its usage in the future to grow vegetables and herbs for the Horseshoe Lodge, & Retreat Center, and potentially provide a community garden in the future! By supporting MPEC in this endeavor, you will be contributing to the cost of the building materials of the greenhouse and the purchase of weather measuring instruments.
Please help support this great cause and the improvement of climate and weather awareness among future generations of Pueblo. We hope to have the greenhouse completed and ready for use before the start of our 2017/2018 Earth Studies program in late August. Thank you for taking the time to learn about our greenhouse project and for supporting MPEC in providing climate/weather education.
