Support the Network You Rely On
We have had an incredible season this year with above average snowfall and many great days in the mountains. However, as temperatures rise we are shifting gears to plan for seasons to come, and the Spring Fund Drive has become a critical piece in this annual transition. Last year we raised $30,000 to build our mountain weather stations graphs which have become an important trip planning tool for NWAC users.
This year we are asking you to help us upgrade our weather stations network.
The weather stations are crucial as they give objective information that is essential for the mountain weather and avalanche forecasts, often in areas with no other information.
Whether you’re a recreational user of NWAC telemetry, who wakes up every morning and habitually checks the temperatures and snowfall at your local mountain, or a mountain professional who relies on that data to make decisions about where to operate, telemetry is essential.
The NWAC weather station network is the most extensive in the country with 46 weather stations, but many are outdated and require more resources to upkeep every year. Currently these systems are maintained by our forecasters in the summer months in conjunction with our partners, which means our capacity to respond to winter outages is often limited.
This year our goal is to raise $25,000 to complete an audit of our weather stations, prioritize stations to upgrade, and allocate funds to create a specific position for weather station upgrades.
