Improved Energy Access through Biomass Briquettes
Organized by: Prarthana Bhattarai
Event Name: Keep Supporting CGI U Commitments
AMOUNT RAISED IN PREVIOUS ROUND: $250
My CGI U Commitment to Action will provide access to a healthier and more efficient energy source in rural Nepal by training women on production of biomass briquettes. The briquettes will be manufactured using a locally available shrub named Banmara; it is an invasive species that has caused extensive damage to the grazing lands and natural forests.
In most of rural Nepal, families depend on firewood collected from forests for cooking daily meal. This puts extra burden on women and girls, in addition to exposing them to toxic smoke that comes from burning firewood. Enabling women to produce alternative energy source will reduce their dependence on firewood for household needs. Compared to firewood, biomass briquettes are healthier and more efficient source of energy. Thus, my Commitment to Action is about improving energy access, while simultaneously conserving the local forest - first, by reducing dependence on firewood and second, by controlling spread of an invasive shrub.
