Seattle to New York. 3600 miles. 2 bikes....1 cause.

MOVE FOR ALS is a global ALS-awareness fundraising campaign inspired by historian Tony Judt.

On May 25th, to raise awareness of ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease or Motor Neuron Disease), two young men – one a former student of Judt’s – began a grueling 2-month long cycle ride from Seattle to New York as part of a collaborative fundraising movement for Project A.L.S., the non-profit organization that funds and conducts scientific research seeking a cure for ALS.

Their route will take them from the Pacific, through the Rocky Mountains and down into the Great Plains, from where they will cycle across the Midwest and on to the Atlantic Coast. They aim to arrive in Brighton Beach, New York on July 25th in time for sunset and a swim.

Any donation, however large or small, will directly fund the scientific research crucial to finding a cure for one of the world’s worst fatal diseases – as well as help to find treatments for related motor neuron diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s. All proceeds will go toward Project A.L.S. scientific research.

A few words from Saul Goldberg:

"Tony Judt means a lot to me. He has been my university professor, my mentor, my friend and, at times, a father figure. I have witnessed every stage of his physical deterioration: at first, losing the power of his fingers; then his arms; then his legs; and, eventually, becoming confined to his present state: wheelchair-bound, paralyzed, able to breathe only with the aid of a machine. I have witnessed the ravaging effects of this disease: the incommunicable psychological pain it inflicts upon its victims, and the suffering of their families.I decided to cycle across the US as a demonstration of the kind of basic physical activity which ALS prevents Tony from enjoying. If, during my lifetime, a cure were discovered for ALS, it would be a joy to know that we had helped a little along the way."
