A growing number of children and adults suffer from a chronic and complex group of diseases described as Eosinophilic (ee-oh-sin-oh-fill-ick) Gastrointestinal Disorders (EGIDs). Eosinophils are important in your body’s defence against parasitic infections (e.g. worms); however, they are also involved in allergy. In some individuals, eosinophils accumulate in the gut in response to food and/or airborne allergens and can cause inflammation and tissue damage.

The primary treatments for people suffering from EGIDs are corticosteroids and elimination diets. Many patients live on very strict elimination diets with just a few safe foods and they rely on expensive elemental medical formula to survive. Some children have no safe foods and require feeding tubes for nutrition. Additionally, the only way to monitor the severity of an EGID is through invasive procedures, such as endoscopies and tissue biopsies.

There is a desperate need for research to determine better treatments, more effective testing procedures and the reasons that EGIDs exist. It is also very important to spread awareness of these conditions so that families and individuals affected can find the support and understanding they need within their communities.

American Partnership for Eosinophilic Disorders (APFED) is a non-profit organization dedicated to patients and their families coping with eosinophilic disorders. APFED strives to expand education, create awareness, and support research while promoting advocacy among its members. Proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly to APFED in order to support its very important mission.
